Heather Mitchell

My experienced and traveled background allows me to approach each case and client with a compassion and attention to detail that is rare in criminal defense.

I am a former Public Defender, Federal Public Defender, Chief Judge for the Havasupai Tribe, and Chief Judge at Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and is licensed to practice in the District of Colorado, United States District Court of North Dakota, and State of Florida. As a Public Defender in adult misdemeanors, I handled an average of 200 cases at a time and over 100 cases at a time in felony adult division. I litigated over 35 jury trials in two years. Over my Federal Public Defender career, I handled over 750 cases in and out of the courtroom including, but not limited to, drug trafficking, bank robbery, murder, counterfeiting and a variety of immigration cases.

As Chief Judge of the Havasupai Tribe and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, I presided over criminal court and child custody cases and started an alternative drug court while ensuring all tribal courts were conducted in compliance with Tribal Law and traditions.

In my private practice, I practice family law and defend criminal cases.

I received my Juris Doctor from Emory Law School in Atlanta after traveling the world with American Airlines. I have been to over 40 countries and was active with Airline Ambassadors (flying unaccompanied children from third world countries to and from the US for necessary medical treatment; usually as part of a charity where the charity could only afford to fly the child, not adults, to accompany them, we would use flight benefits to travel with the child; we also conducted missions flying supplies, like shoes, to orphanages in third world countries).

Having lived in Cancun, Mexico, I am conversational in Spanish. I enjoy Colorado’s amazing outdoors (Fishing, hiking, camping) with my family and three fur-babies.
